About this crossing

The Windsor Tunnel is the downtown Detroit-Windsor crossing, running under the river rather than over it, and it carries far less commercial traffic than the two bridges beside it. The Ambassador Bridge and the Gordie Howe International Bridge are the corridor's freight crossings; the tunnel is primarily a passenger route between the two downtowns. CBP often has no commercial reading for it, and that is a statement about its traffic rather than a gap in the data. A tunnel with a small commercial lane will not always have a truck in it when the reading is taken, so this site reports it as not reported instead of showing a zero that would read as a clear lane. For a carrier the tunnel is worth knowing about as a fallback rather than a plan. It is minutes from the bridges, so if both are backed up it is close enough to check. Standard tunnel restrictions on dimensions and hazardous materials apply and are tighter than on a bridge, so not every load can use it.
