About this crossing

The Sault Ste. Marie International Bridge is the only crossing between Michigan and Ontario for a long way in either direction, which makes it the sole link on the northern route across the Great Lakes. Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario and Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan are the same city split by a river, and the bridge is what holds the two halves together. For freight that matters because the alternative is enormous. A carrier that finds this crossing closed is looking at a detour measured in many hours, either east through Sault-area alternatives that do not exist or south around the lakes entirely. There is no second option within a practical distance. The bridge carries two lanes and a commercial booth, and the port is sized for the regional traffic it serves rather than for the volumes the southern Ontario crossings handle. Fuel, food and parking are available in both cities, which is not true of most northern crossings.
