About this crossing

The Gordie Howe International Bridge is the newest major crossing on the Canadian border and the one that changes the calculus for the Detroit-Windsor corridor. It connects Windsor directly to the I-75 interchange in Detroit, which means a carrier no longer has to route through city streets to reach the interstate system on the American side. That direct interchange connection is the point of it. The Ambassador Bridge has been the corridor's workhorse for decades and still carries the larger share of commercial traffic, but its approaches run through built-up areas on both sides. The Gordie Howe was built to take that pressure off, and it has more lanes to do it with. For a dispatcher the two are now a genuine choice rather than a single option, and because they sit minutes apart on the same river a driver can check both before committing. Detroit-Windsor is the busiest commercial crossing on the border, so the second crossing is the first real relief that corridor has had.
