About this crossing

Sumas is the eastern of the Washington-BC crossings, sitting on Highway 547 between Sumas, Washington and Abbotsford, British Columbia. It is the crossing for the Fraser valley's agricultural and industrial traffic, and it connects directly to the Trans-Canada Highway on the Canadian side. That direct connection is why it carries freight. A carrier moving between the American northwest and the BC interior can clear here and be on Highway 1 heading east within minutes, rather than working through the lower mainland. For anything bound for Calgary or the interior, that makes it the efficient choice. The American approach is rural and the Canadian side opens onto the freeway. Sumas is a small town and the services are limited compared to Blaine, but Abbotsford is immediately north with everything a driver needs. Volume is steady and the port handles the regional lane well.
