About this crossing

Highgate Springs is the Interstate 89 crossing between Vermont and Quebec, and it is the northern terminus of the freeway that runs through Burlington and on to Montpelier. On the Canadian side it connects toward Montreal by way of Autoroute 35. That makes it the second freeway crossing on the Vermont-Quebec line alongside Derby Line, and the two serve different directions from the border. Highgate Springs points toward Montreal and the Richelieu valley, while Derby Line points toward Sherbrooke and the Eastern Townships. A carrier should know which one its route actually wants. The port handles commercial traffic for the corridor running through Burlington, which includes significant cross-border freight between Vermont and Quebec industry. It is a full auto route on the American side and a smaller road on the Canadian side, and the approaches are rural in both directions with limited services.
