About this crossing

International Falls is the Minnesota-Ontario crossing on the Rainy River, across from Fort Frances, Ontario. US Highway 53 and Ontario Highway 11 meet here, and that combination puts the crossing on the direct line between the American upper Midwest and northwestern Ontario. That route is the whole reason the port matters. Northwestern Ontario is served from Winnipeg or from Thunder Bay, and Thunder Bay is reached from the American side through this crossing or by a long haul around the lakes. For a carrier moving freight between Minnesota, Wisconsin or the Dakotas and that region, International Falls is the short way. The port itself is small and the town on either side is small with it. It handles a steady regional commercial lane rather than heavy volume, and the crossing is short and direct. Services exist in both International Falls and Fort Frances, though the range is limited compared to a major corridor.
