Across the line

Diesel crosses the border, but the number does not. The Canadian side is published per litre and the American side per gallon.

Vancouver · Canadian side293.7¢/L
West Coast · the US district next door$7.394/gal

The American figure is the EIA weekly retail survey — published as $7.394/gal this week — shown the way an American carrier reads it, with the Canadian-dollar equivalent beside it once the page loads. A gallon is not a litre, so these two lines measure the same fuel in different units and the cents will never match. What does compare is the market: a load crossing into West Coast buys its fuel on the other side of a border.

Vancouver runs 29.4¢ above the national index — a real difference on a 500-litre fill. Work out a trip

What drives Vancouver prices

Vancouver is Canada's largest port and the Pacific gateway for container and bulk freight. A Metro Vancouver transit tax adds to the pump price. The city has no major local refinery, so fuel arrives by the Trans Mountain pipeline from Alberta. Vancouver is also the western terminus of Hwy 1, the Trans-Canada. The port and the road network move container and bulk freight, and the tax and the pipeline supply are part of what carriers pay at the pump on the coast.
