Across the line

Diesel crosses the border, but the number does not. The Canadian side is published per litre and the American side per gallon.

Prince Edward Island · Canadian side254.4¢/L
New England · the US district next door$6.510/gal

The American figure is the EIA weekly retail survey — published as $6.510/gal this week — shown the way an American carrier reads it, with the Canadian-dollar equivalent beside it. A gallon is not a litre, so these two lines measure the same fuel in different units and the cents will never match. What does compare is the market: a load crossing at New England buys its fuel somewhere else.

What drives Prince Edward Island prices

Prince Edward Island is a single-city survey, which makes its number the easiest on this site to read and the easiest to misread. In the Natural Resources Canada print dated 29 September 2026 the province averaged 254.4 cents per litre, 6.5 cents below the national index of 260.9.

Charlottetown is the only survey city, so that figure is Charlottetown. It is not an average of anywhere else, because there is nowhere else in the survey. The island's fuel arrives by truck over the Confederation Bridge or by ferry, with no refinery and no marine terminal of its own, and yet it prices below the national average. That is not a contradiction. It reflects a small, dense market where nearly every litre passes through the same few distribution points, and where the distances between them are short.

What the number cannot tell you is what happens in a bridge closure or an ice season, when the only land link is out and the supply chain has to reroute. The posted retail price is measured in normal conditions. If you run the island regularly, the thing to watch is not the price but the bridge status, because that is what turns a cheap fuel market into an inaccessible one.

One caution on every figure here. The NRCan survey measures posted retail rather than cardlock. If you run a fuel card your cost is usually lower, so use your card price for a specific fill and this number to follow direction.
