Nova Scotia diesel prices
Across the line
Diesel crosses the border, but the number does not. The Canadian side is published per litre and the American side per gallon.
The American figure is the EIA weekly retail survey — published as $6.510/gal this week — shown the way an American carrier reads it, with the Canadian-dollar equivalent beside it. A gallon is not a litre, so these two lines measure the same fuel in different units and the cents will never match. What does compare is the market: a load crossing at New England buys its fuel somewhere else.

What drives Nova Scotia prices
Nova Scotia sits close to the national average, which for an Atlantic province is worth explaining. In the Natural Resources Canada print dated 29 September 2026 it averaged 266.4 cents per litre, 5.5 cents above the national index of 260.9, a smaller gap than either New Brunswick or Newfoundland.
Halifax is the reason. It is a deep-water port with an import terminal and the largest population centre in the region, and a port that can take a marine cargo directly does not pay the inland haul that a smaller market does. Sydney and the Cape Breton markets are further from that terminal and price accordingly. Kentville, New Glasgow, Truro and Yarmouth fill in the rest of a six-city survey that covers the province fairly well for its size.
The pattern to watch here is the relationship with New Brunswick rather than the national average. The two provinces share a supply corridor and a border, and when they diverge it is usually because of what happened at Saint John or on the water rather than anything local. For a carrier running Halifax to Moncton, the spread between those two figures is the number that matters, not either one of them against the country.
One caution on every figure here. The NRCan survey measures posted retail, not cardlock. Your fuel card price is usually lower, so plan a specific fill from your card and use this number to track which way the province is going.

Every price is an NRCan survey observation from the print dated Tue, 29 Sep 2026. The provincial figure is the unweighted mean of these 6 cities, the same figure that enters the Northern Mile Diesel Index. Prices include all federal and provincial fuel, carbon, and sales taxes.
