Newfoundland and Labrador diesel prices
Across the line
Diesel crosses the border, but the number does not. The Canadian side is published per litre and the American side per gallon.
The American figure is the EIA weekly retail survey — published as $6.510/gal this week — shown the way an American carrier reads it, with the Canadian-dollar equivalent beside it. A gallon is not a litre, so these two lines measure the same fuel in different units and the cents will never match. What does compare is the market: a load crossing at New England buys its fuel somewhere else.

What drives Newfoundland and Labrador prices
Newfoundland and Labrador has the longest fuel supply chain in this survey and the price reflects it. In the Natural Resources Canada print dated 29 September 2026 the province averaged 272.7 cents per litre, 11.8 cents above the national index of 260.9, second only to Quebec in the survey.
The mechanism is water. There is no pipeline to the island and no refinery on it, so diesel arrives by marine tanker at terminals in St John's and Corner Brook, then moves by road from there. Every litre sold in Gander or Grand Falls-Windsor has been on a ship and then on a truck before it reaches a pump. Labrador City is different again, supplied on a haul that has more in common with northern Quebec than with the island.
Four survey cities carry that average, and they are far apart in every sense: St John's, Corner Brook, Gander and Labrador City. A provincial mean spanning those four is a broad statement about the province rather than a price anyone pays. A carrier running the Avalon Peninsula and one running the Labrador route are in different fuel markets that happen to share a provincial boundary.
One caution on every figure here. The NRCan survey measures posted retail rather than cardlock, so your cost is usually below the posted average. Use your own card price for a specific fill, and treat this number as a direction rather than a quote.

Every price is an NRCan survey observation from the print dated Tue, 29 Sep 2026. The provincial figure is the unweighted mean of these 4 cities, the same figure that enters the Northern Mile Diesel Index. Prices include all federal and provincial fuel, carbon, and sales taxes.
