New Brunswick diesel prices

Across the line

Diesel crosses the border, but the number does not. The Canadian side is published per litre and the American side per gallon.

New Brunswick · Canadian side269.9¢/L
New England · the US district next door$6.510/gal

The American figure is the EIA weekly retail survey — published as $6.510/gal this week — shown the way an American carrier reads it, with the Canadian-dollar equivalent beside it. A gallon is not a litre, so these two lines measure the same fuel in different units and the cents will never match. What does compare is the market: a load crossing at New England buys its fuel somewhere else.

What drives New Brunswick prices

New Brunswick is one of the few provinces in this survey that refines more diesel than it consumes. The Irving refinery at Saint John is the largest in Canada, and the province sits at the end of the pipeline network rather than the middle of it. In the Natural Resources Canada print dated 29 September 2026, New Brunswick averaged 269.9 cents per litre, 9.0 cents above the national index of 260.9.

That combination is worth sitting with, because it is counterintuitive. A province with refining capacity still pays above the national average. The answer is where the product goes. Saint John refines for an export market and for the American northeast as much as for the Maritimes, so New Brunswick's retail price competes with buyers outside the province rather than being set by local supply. Producing something does not make it cheap where it is produced if it can be sold for more somewhere else.

The survey covers ten New Brunswick cities, which is dense for a province this size: Bathurst, Campbellton, Edmundston, Fredericton, Grand Falls, Miramichi, Moncton, Saint John, Sussex and Woodstock. That spread reflects how the province is shaped. It is a long, narrow corridor along the Trans-Canada with a spur north, and each of those towns is a real truck stop rather than a suburb of another one.

One caution on every figure here. The NRCan survey measures posted retail, not cardlock. If you run a fuel card your cost is usually lower than the posted average, so use your card price for a specific fill and this number to track direction.
